Celebrating 40 Years of a Freight Game-Changer
This year marks 40 years since the Class 59 transformed UK rail freight — and we’re proud to mark the milestone by repainting the very first Class 59, 59001, into its iconic Yeoman-inspired livery, combined with Heavy Haul Rail branding.
When 59001 entered service, the Class 59 rewrote the rulebook: American built, exceptionally reliable, and designed specifically for heavy haul operations. It set a new benchmark for performance, availability and private investment — influencing almost every modern UK freight locomotive that followed.
The original Yeoman livery became a symbol of that change: bold, industrial and confident, representing a new era for aggregates and heavy freight. By reinstating this look on 59001, we’re celebrating not just a locomotive, but a step change moment in rail freight history.
At Heavy Haul Rail, we’re proud to support and sustain the legacy of equipment that helped shape today’s railway — while continuing to focus on performance, reliability and heavy haul expertise for the future.
Thanks to the Heavy Haul Rail Engineering & Maintenance team including Craig Spratt, Tim Salvidge and Peter Brown; and Arlington Fleet Services at Eastleigh for bringing the Yeoman / Heavy Haul Rail livery to life on the loco.
Here’s to 59001, the Class 59 fleet, and four decades of innovation on Britain’s railway.
