Carbon Reduction Plan

Heavy Haul Rail is committed to supporting the UK Government’s Net Zero Strategy and delivering meaningful carbon reduction across its operations in line with Procurement Policy Note (PPN) 06/21. As a dedicated bulk rail freight operator, Heavy Haul Rail plays a critical role in enabling low-carbon logistics and reducing road congestion by offering a more sustainable alternative to road haulage.

Please read our Carbon Reduction Plan in conjunction with this Operating Notice which explains that following the sale of Freightliner to CMA CGM in January 2026, transitionary arrangements are in place to ensure that Safety Management System (SMS) and Environmental Management System (EMS) documentation remains up to date and relevant in both Heavy Haul Rail and Freightliner, and that the published documents are accepted and agreed on behalf of both businesses. Activity is ongoing to continue this across the remainder of the SMS and EMS documentation with a commitment that this work will be completed by the end of 2026, at which point each organisation will take individual control of its own SMS, EMS, target setting and performance reporting. In the interim documents, branded Freightliner Group, and all product or service delivery contracts in the name of Freightliner Group Ltd, should be considered to apply equally and in full to both Freightliner Ltd and Heavy Haul Rail Ltd.
